In the world premiere of National Theatre of Scotland’s new take on the timeless tale Dracula, the action is relocated to the wild beauty of Aberdeenshire – reportedly the inspiration for Bram Stoker’s classic novel.
This adaptation finds Mina Murray in a psychiatric hospital in 1897, where she seeks refuge to escape the horrors she has experienced, retelling her encounters with the most terrifying of beasts: Dracula. She is joined by her fellow female patients in a world where immortality and ultimate power is possible, even for women – but with terrible consequences.
Infused with creator Morna Pearson’s trademark humour, theatricality and taste for the strange, the shocking and the grotesque, the production celebrates the novel’s gothic horror origins with a radical twist, as the story is seen through the eyes of Mina and the patients, while the Gothic-inspired set and costumes are accompanied by a dark musical score.
