Edinburgh’s Queen’s Hall is set to host Dutch violinist and composer Tim Kliphuis, who will debut his re-working of Modeste Mussorgsky’s 19th-century masterpiece Pictures at an Exhibition. 150 years since the innovative original, Tim’s re-working reflects contemporary themes and showcases his signature approach, which combines gypsy-jazz improvisation with the classical tradition, and in addition to Mussorgsky’s famous themes, incorporates new music, inspired by artworks by Gustav Klimt, Katsushika Hokusai and Georgia O’Keeffe. The piece includes improvisational elements, so changes each time it’s performed by the Trio.

Having learnt gypsy-jazz violin from playing and recording with Dutch Sinti gypsy guitarists, in Django Reinhardt-style, Tim blossomed as a composer and player, collaborating with the Netherlands Chamber Orchestra, Cape Town Philharmonic and Tallinn Chamber Orchestra, touring the world, and sharing the stage with renowned musicians such as Les Paul, Richard Galliano and Roby Lakatos. He has composed concerti for the Amsterdam Concertgebouw and the Radio Philharmonic Orchestra, and in 2022 accompanied the Dutch royal family on their state visit to Sweden. The following year Tim and his Trio (Nigel Clark on guitar and Roy Percy on double bass) open the United Nations General Assembly’s Water Conference, performing to representatives of 190 countries.
