The inaugural exhibition at K U D I R K A – a new summer exhibition space in Glasgow’s West End – comprises bold, colourful paintings by artists Rowena Comrie, Sarah Kudirka and Alison McWhirter.
The artists for the opening show comprise three local painters who make distinctive art with an international resonance, exhibiting together for the first time: Rowena Comrie SSA’s energetic and colourful work, Scottish colourist Alison McWhirter is presenting a series of new, ambitious paintings on a Love Song theme, while curator Sarah Kudirka’s paintings seek to evoke human compassion via subtle shell-like forms, rubbing along and buoying each other up.

Launched by Sarah, the one-room space is conceived as a new ‘sometimes’ space for art, with an ethos of lifting others up, comprising a large and elegant ground-floor room in her home – the kind of space, she points out, other owners might have chosen to convert into a gym or cinema room, whereas she and husband Peter chose ‘to fill it with art, music and friends.’ Being north-facing, the room will host the one exhibition at the time of year when the light lasts longest.

While the exhibition’s inauguration coincides with Glasgow’s 2024 International biennale and West End Festival, plans have been made for the next three years’ exhibitions, with the focus on unrepresented women artists. Small-scale music and other arts events will take place on occasions through the year.
LIFT OTHERS UP will be open to the public by appointment* from 1st – 23rd June from 5 til 8pm, but has Open Days planned for 12 – 4pm on 8th and 15th June, with a private view (by invitation) 5 – 8pm on the 15th. *Appointments can be made via Instagram: @kudirka_ok or text to +44 777 904 3307
