The Society of Wood Engravers returns to Perth’s Frames Gallery for its 86th Annual Exhibition, and includes 127 works from all over the world, in great variety. This year, the focus is on prints in the tradition of Thomas Bewick (1753-1828), who discovered that by engraving on the end-grain of boxwood it was possible to produce much more detailed work than with wood cuts, for which different tools are used and cutting is along the grain of the wood.
The Society of Wood Engravers (SWE) was founded in 1920. Membership is by selection by committee. Some members take their inspiration from the great practitioners of the mid-20th century, sometimes referred to as a golden age, such as Gertrude Hermes, Eric Ravilious, David Jones, Clare Leighton and Monica Poole.
The Gallery supports the Own Art finance scheme, which makes purchasing artworks more affordable through payment by instalments.
