An exhibition at Glasgow’s Cass Art of works on paper by artist Liz Reid is set to feature drawings, prints and urban sketches of the city. Liz will be taking up residence for two weeks in the Art Space at the well-known art supplier’s flagship store on Glasgow’s Queen Street. She lives in the city’s east end, and works from her studio in the Barras, capturing in line, pattern and detail the inspiration and vibrancy of city life in her drawings and prints.

Works on show will include new large-format detailed drawings based on shop window displays in Glasgow and beyond, as well as bold black & white lino prints and drawings in ink of Glasgow landmark buildings. Liz has a particular interest in architectural subjects and helps to lead the Glasgow Urban Sketchers group, drawing live on location around the city.

Also on display as part of the INK exhibition will be 100 small works drawn on beer mats – a form of sketch diary created as part of the 100 Days Project Scotland, an annual challenge designed to bring together a community through creative daily practice.

Liz will be drawing every day in the Art Space and adding new works to the display throughout the exhibition. Thanks to the generous support of Cass Art in providing materials, she will also be inviting visitors to join her for the start of INKtober – a month-long daily drawing challenge designed to develop a positive creative habit and share it with others.

On 13th October, to close the exhibition, Liz will be teaming up with author LG Thomson to discuss LG’s latest book, Bitter Fruit – a narrative memoir in which Liz is one of the main characters. The pair met at art school in 1981 and in this discussion they will reflect on their time there, what life was like for aspiring artists in 1980s Scotland, and the paths taken since. LG will talk about the process of writing a memoir and find out from Liz what it’s like to read about yourself in a book; as LG is well-known for the dark humour in her novels and memoirs, this promises to be an entertaining and thought-provoking event with creativity at its heart.

The exhibition is free, and open daily during Cass Art’s shop-opening hours, while the Bitter Fruit event, on Sunday 13 October 2:30–4pm is ticketed at £11.50, via Eventbrite, with refreshments provided for the over-18s.
