Painter Helen Glassford‘s new collection of ethereal landscapes at the Scottish Gallery, Edinburgh, The Phenomenal World, is the product of two years of hard labour. Drawing on memory and experience of remote areas of northern Scotland, Glassford suggests movement with simple washes and minimal brushwork or timelessness with layers of pigment and glazes. Helen says, ‘My work is about the experience of being in the landscape. It’s about the excitement and the passion I have for paint and where it is going to take you in that moment. In a way, I go beyond the place. Sometimes the unseen is deeper in a sense than the seen. There’s more imagination to it.’
