The name Jo van Gogh-Bonger may not be a household one, but without her the work of one of the most famous artists of all time may have been completely overlooked. Jo married Theo van Gogh, becoming Vincent’s sister in law. After the artist’s suicide and the death of her art dealer husband, Jo worked tirelessly to promote Vincent’s work (he died in artistic obscurity) to a disinterested art world, eventually making a breakthrough which would propel van Gogh to superstar status. Told in a strip cartoon format, this fresh take on Vincent’s story describes a man who was irascible and short-tempered, passionate and emotional, absurdly talented and, for most of his life, misunderstood and under-appreciated – and yet today is seen as one of the most inventive, influential and admired painters of the entire western canon.
