Cindy Sherman, Anish Kapoor, Yayoi Kusama, Tracey Emin and Jeff Koons are among over 150 contemporary artists whose work shows a fascination with mirrors and reflective surfaces. However, author Michael Petry begins his survey in 1434 with Jan van Eyck’s Arnolfini Portrait, one of the first paintings to feature a significant mirror. He goes on to reference key works by great masters, from Diego Velázquez’s The Rokeby Venus (1647–1651) to Édouard Manet’s A Bar at the Folies-Bergère (1882) to Claude Cahun’s seminal photograph Reflected Image in Mirror, Checked Jacket (1928). Present day practitioners are no less intrigued by reflection, often working with modern technologies and materials. So we have Jeff Koons’ Balloon sculptures, Subodh Gupta’s stainless steel, life-sized trees and Not Vital’s mirror architecture. Special consideration is given to selfies and the way in which the cellphone now operates as a modern day mirror to the self.
