Led by the Mental Health Foundation, and comprising over 220 events from Orkney to Dumfries, this year’s edition of the Scottish Mental Health Arts Festival – the 18th – is inspired by the theme In/Visible, exploring what it means to be ‘visible’ or ‘invisible’ in the context of mental health. Which aspects of our mental health do we keep hidden and which do we share? Who is made to feel unseen and unheard? How do we challenge the inequalities which render people ‘invisible’?
Visual art highlights of the multi-disciplinary programme include: Our Power, a display created by people who have experienced racist micro-aggressions, exploring the impacts it has on their mental health (Gallery of Modern Art, Glasgow, until 31st Dec); Out of Sight Out of Mind – the biggest mental health-themed group art exhibition in Scotland, with 365 artists participating this year (Summerhall, Edinburgh, until 27th Oct); and newly-commissioned works by five artists responding to the ‘In/Visible’ theme, shown online and at live events, including a sculptural installation by Ritu Arya consisting of ‘inside-like’ bodily shapes representing the impact of trauma.
