Aladdin has boarded the magic carpet and arrived in Glasgow (in style!) Disney Theatrical Productions, under the direction of Thomas Schumacher, are presenting the critically-acclaimed Broadway and West End musical. After first having premiered on Broadway in 2014, this musical has a catchy score and a sparkly, fun and talented production behind it.

Gavin Adams (see image credits at bottom)

Aladdin, played by Gavin Adams – a recent graduate of the Royal Academy of Music – does a fantastic job in his first professional debut in the title role. Also a graduate of the Academy, Desmonda Cathabel (Miss Saigon, From Here to Eternity) plays Jasmine, who truly shines on stage with her confidence and strength. The two have incredible chemistry and stunning vocals, their duet A Whole New World is especially magical. They make the perfect Disney duo.

The UK and Ireland tour of the production stars Yeukayi Ushe (Disney’s The Lion King, A Strange Loop, Kinky Boots and Motown The Musical) as Genie; however on certain nights this role is portrayed by Damien Winchester, who does an absolutely incredible job bringing this character to life. Winchester’s vocal skills are off the charts, his humour and lightness brought the audience absolute joy and laughter trickled through whenever he made an appearance. It’s safe to say that this Genie absolutely stole the show.

The show itself is such an incredible spectacle with its vivid, sparkly and beautiful sets. Bob Crowley (Scenic Design) has created something truly special. From the moment the curtain lifts the audience is transported into the bustling streets of the fictional city of Agrabah. The set changes are quick and truly impressive, each with a special new insight into the story. The costumes, by Gregg Barnes, are stunning and everything works so well together that the whole production seems to flow very effortlessly together.

Male and Female Ensemble

Songs featured are extremely catchy and hearing some of the classics is a real highlight. Opening with Arabian Nights gets the audience into the groove of things instantly. The live orchestra, with conductor / musical director Dave Rose at the helm, adds to the overall experience and makes it an unforgettable show. The whole ensemble is utterly impressive and big numbers such as Friend Like Me have the audience transfixed.
